Previous Lawrence County researchers have stated that the first ferry was in operation before 1818 by a Mr. Lamphere near the junction of Flat Creek and the Wabash River. The first hotel was constructed in 1818 to vacillate the travelers who were arriving daily to use the ferry in their journey into the new land. A grist mill was located there.
However this researcher has found that about 1837 David Price established a ferry and built a boat sufficient to carry a team across the River.
"Ferry Notice, October 12, 1837: To all persons whom this may concern You will hereby take notice that I shall apply to the Commissioners’ Court of Knox County at their next January term for the establishment of a Ferry across the Wabash opposite Russellville, Ill on Fractional Sec# 4 in T4NR10 W. Vincennes Oct 12, 1837 David Price.
Ferry Rates Across the Wabash River 1886

With 2 horses -- 25 cents
With 1 horse -- 20 cents
Each head of mules, horses or cattle when less than 10 crossed-- 5 cents
When 10 or more crosses at once --3 cents

When the River was very high and required the ferryman to run his boat 200 or more yds beyond the usual landing then double the amount shown above might be charged.
