LAWRENCE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY PHOTO Contest

 

The Society holds a photo contest every year to capture the historic landmarks, items, buildings, and monuments of Lawrence County. 

RURAL SCHOOLProject

Completed

 

The Society gathered the history of all 76 rural 'one-room' schools in Lawrence County from the 1840's. Individual histories and over 750 photographs were compiled in a book and on a CD.

RELOCATION OF MILLSTONES Project    Completed

 

Necessity of relocation of Small's Millstones from former Lawrenceville High School grounds to Southeast corner of Courthouse lawn completed in fall of 2013 with the assistance of the County Commissioners and Moore Bros. Contractors. Click here

WEDDINGS THROUGH THE AGES Project

A show that was a combination of historical facts, wedding photos of local couples, and a runway production with over 30 beautiful models wearing vintage dresses. Click here

WATER/WAYS Project

Completed

 

Host Water/Ways, a new Museum on Main Street exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution examining the monumental significance of water from Sept 3 through October 16, 2016. In addition a local exhibit will be created to document how water has been integral to Lawrence County’s culture and economy. Click here 

LANTERMAN HISTORY VILLAGE

Project

 

 

Renovate two historic buildings now located at Bridgeport Lanterman Park, Dr. Schrader’s office and Pepple School,  to use in an educational program for school children. Click here

CEMETERY Project

 

Create an updated database for all county cemeteries to include their location, gravestone identification and obituaries. Centerville Cemetery in Allison Township is now online. Guided tours of Sumner and Centerville Cemeteries have been presented. Click here

 

BLACK HISTORY Project   

 

Document the unique history of the free blacks who helped settle Lawrence County.  Click here

 BUSINESSESON THE SQUARE Project

 

Create a photographic history of each building on the Lawrenceville Square and of the merchants who occupied these locations. Click here
