David Foote, our correspondent from Crawford County, responded to the earlier blog about Jesse Dubois.
Following the Pres. Lincoln and Gov Yates call for troops for the Civil War, Clark B. Lagow from Palestine was one of those who helped raise a company. It became Company I of the 21st Regiment and he was elected 1/Lt by those boys.
The 21st became an unruly mess mostly because their selected Colonel, Simon S. Goode, ended up being incompetent and had to be replaced, according to David L. Goff, a former Asst Adjutant General from Illinois in the New York Times of March 20, 1880. It was suggested that Jesse K. Dubois help find a replacement and that replacement was U.S. Grant from Galena, Illinois.
When Grant was promoted to Brigadier General, he selected an original member of the 21st as an aide-de-camp. It was Palestine resident Clark B. Lagow.
Most Grant history books do not mention Dubois or the possible Palestine connections.
Thanks for this additionbal information, David.
