Amanda Jane Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D W Baker of Sumner, was a registered nurse. During WWI she was in active service at Camp Wadsworth near Spartanburg South Carolina for more than a year.  She went on to oversee the operating room at Charleston South Carolina Hospital in 1919.

According to a 1920 newspaper reporter, “Ross J. Benefiel, confirmed bachelor and Lawrence County Superintendent of Highways and City Engineer, surprised the local residents by marrying Miss Amanda Jane Baker of Sumner in Cincinnati, on March 29, 1920.”

The Historical Society is honored to receive a donation of these three uniforms that belonged to Nurse Benefiel.
