The exhibit, Dresses Worn by Lawrence County Ladies Through the Decades, may well be one of the finest displays the curators have ever assembled. For a small museum, the collection of vintage clothing is exceptional—not because it can offer the broad, uninterrupted sweep of fashions that a large metropolitan institution might provide, but because of the quality, local significance, and care represented in the pieces that have survived. Small museums are unlikely to have a wide selection from every era, style movement, or social class; their holdings depend on what local families preserved, donated, and entrusted to the institution over time. That makes this exhibit especially meaningful. Each dress is more than an example of changing fashion—it is a tangible connection to the women of Lawrence County, the occasions they marked, the standards of beauty and propriety they observed, and the community history they helped create.
