These black and White photos do not do justice to the lightly tinted green glass of these "Soda Pop Bottles". The one on the left is a recent acquisition. It is a 6 1/2 fl. oz bottle stamped on the bottom " S & M" and imprinted with the head of an Indian chief wearing a feather headdress and the words "The Bottling Works Lawrenceville Ill"
The one on the right is one of three in our possession and is 8 inches tall and stamped with an "L" on the bottom. It is imprinted "Lawrence Bottling Works." It also hold 6 1/2 fl. oz.
These bottles were sealed with wax caps being ordinary tin caps lined with cork and covered with paraffin.
The Lawrenceville Ice and Cold storage Plant operated a bottling works where “pops and about thirty of the favorite drinks were manufactured from pure distilled water and distributed.” Tom Foster was in charge of the bottle works.
Stop by and see these at the History Center in the Business Exhibit. Call for an appointment 908-208-2372.
