February 15, 1962 Bridgeport Leader

Local Athlete is Signed by Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates baseball squad will be augmented by the up and coming local baseball star catcher, Robert Waggoner. He has been signed by Joe Grace, scout of Murphysboro, Illinois, following several visits and interviews. He signed as a catcher with bonus and salary.

Bob is a graduate of the Lawrenceville High School and was their number one pitcher. His brother Dick Waggoner is a graduate of BTHS. His father Willard Waggoner played independent baseball and evidently has been a great influence on the boys.

Bob attended BTHS and as a sophomore, 1957-1959 led the Bulldogs with a batting average of .440. He finished school at LTHS.

Bob played with the Bridgeport Oilers making the all-star catcher selection with ease. He is capable of playing every position on the field according to his teammates of past years. He led on home runs (7), runs batted in (26) in 20 games and hit a nice .356.

He is married to the former Linda Stevenson and is operating a dairy farm at Capron, Illinois awaiting the opening of the spring training camp of the Pittsburgh Pirates in Florida, about mid-March.

It is expected he will play with a farm team under the Pirates the first season or two.
