In other circus news: Friday, April 30th, 1880 At the matinee of the Barnum’s Circus in New York, the fire horse “Salamander” was introduced in the ring and performed its customary feats. There were present a captain of police and twenty patrolmen. Warrants had been obtained for the arrest of Mr. Barnum and others taking part in that performance. Mr. Barnum addressed the audience, approached the circle of fire, put his hands, also his coat tails, in the flames and then jumped through the hoop followed by a number of clowns doing the same. After the horse performed the same trick, the police captain said there was not the slightest danger in the feats, that there was no cruelty manifested to the horse, and there had been a mistake.
