Going Going Gone

The availability of shopping malls, box stores, and the internet caused shoppers to bypass the downtown areas in many small towns. Not that long ago, people enjoyed shopping around the Lawrenceville County Courthouse Square. Downtown Lawrenceville bustled with activity at many quality shops, including auto dealerships, shoe stores, clothing shops, a grocery store, a hardware store, Penny's, and Sears to mention just a few.

In even earlier days around the turn of the century, there were several hotels and livery stables around the square with a bus line running from the train depot to "uptown." Merchants regularly sponsored weekly summer concerts on the Square and people came to town to see movies offered at theatres.

Now two historic buildings have “fallen down”. For a history of the businesses in these buildings and some vintage photographs click here and here.
