What's in a name?
Find a Grave has incorrectly named the African American Cemeteries in Lawrence County. They have listed two cemeteries with the name of Portee. Larry Curry has straightened this out for the Historical Society but alas, Find a Grave is harder to correct. (as you know the internet is always correct…)
There is a Portee Cemetery in Bond Twp. It is the largest African American Cemetery in Lawrence County. It is located on Gadd Rd. with 200 plus graves.
The next largest African American Cemetery is the Cole Cemetery in Bond Twp also. It has less than 60 graves. So
lled the Goins Cemetery in Irene Black’s Cemetery Book. (This is the most name -challenged Cemetery of them all.)
There is an African American Cemetery in Russell Twp called the Tann Cemetery. It is located across the road and field from the Cole Cemetery. It has less than 20 graves.
The Day Cemetery is an African American Cemetery in Allison Twp across the road and field from the Centerville Cemetery. It has less than 12 graves.
The Goins Cemetery is an African American Cemetery on Flat Branch Ln 1/2 mile south of Pinkstaff in Bond Twp. Number of graves unknown. (No markers)
The Morris Cemetery is an African American Cemetery located in Bond Twp on Morris Ln. Approximately 2 1/2 mi. west of Route 1. It has less than 20 graves.
There is a Pettiford Cemetery in Allison Twp. and a Russell Cemetery in Russell Twp. Both are African American family cemeteries no longer physically visible. (Farmed over) Some gravestones can be found in the fence row for Pettiford Cemetery.
