Are you tired of staying at home? Not finding anything to watch on TV?  Too hot to do anything outside? The Historical Society has some interesting programs planned for the next month.  There will more publicity on these in the next few days, but we wanted to let you know now so you could make plans.

First on Monday July 14 at 7:00 at the History Center Donn Grenda, the archaeologist who recovered the historic graves of early Lawrence County settlers John W Warner Sr (1769-1838) and his wife Malinda Duke Warner Crews (1806-1858) from their first burial sites on their farm in Allison township and re-interred them at Centerville Cemetery a few summers ago will present a program. Many of you have been asking about his findings and the process so this is your chance.

Next on Monday July 28 at 7:00 at the History Center David Kroese of St. Louis, a consultant with the National Park Service, will present a program.

And on Monday August 4th  the Historical Society is pleased to announce that Illinois Humanities has asked us to partner with them in presenting a program about Harold Washington, first African- American mayor of Chicago. Harold’s father Roy was a graduate of Lawrenceville High School in 1917, and his father Mack Washington was an AME church minister who helped start the St James AME church in Lawrenceville.  This program will include a video featuring in part, Lawrence County scenes and interviews, a short program about the Washington family’s involvement with our county, and other speakers provided by Illinois Humanities.  A panel discussion will follow focusing on the role of downstate rural Illinois in the policies and philosophies of Chicago politics. Music and refreshments will be provided.  More on this at a later date.

And if all those programs are not enough, the Central Wabash Archaeology Chapter and the Crawford County Historical Society will be providing Museum tours on Thursday July 10th 6:30 in Robinson. This is your chance to explore the exhibits showcasing Native American artifacts found in this area and learn about the region’s rich archaeological heritage.

So please mark these dates on your calendars and support the organizations who are providing these programs.
