October 26 1900 Bridgeport Robbery
Friday morning news was telephoned to Lawrenceville that the bank safe of Seed Brothers at Bridgeport had been blown open by burglars and rifled of its contents.
About 3:30 in the morning the citizens of that village were aroused from their sleep by an explosion which was soon followed by two others. Quite a number heard it, but the burglars had succeeded in their work and got away before anyone arrived.
In a short time, however, Frank and Robert Seed, who had been notified by Snap Dabbs, arrived at the store and upon investigation found that their large bank safe had been blown open and the contents, amounting to about $1000 in currency and silver and several thousand dollars in notes, besides other valuable papers, were taken.
The safe has three doors, an outside, middle and vault door. The first two were blown open and the vault door was blown from its hinges and found in front of the building. The burglars used nitroglycerin to accomplish their work.
They also took from the store a double barrel shotgun, 4 gold watches, 5 or 6 dozen gold rings and about a dozen gold chains. Entrance to the building was made by prying open the front door.
Telegrams were sent in all directions and Sheriff Pettyjohn and his deputy PJ Carr and Marshall Thorn of Lawrenceville were notified and immediately began a search for the scoundrels but as far as the newspaper could learn a week later no one had yet been arrested.
