Join the Lawrence County Historical Society meeting on Monday, November 18, at 7:00 p.m. at the History Center in Lawrenceville to hear from Dr. Robert B. Pickering, the guest speaker. Dr. Pickering will discuss his latest book, Luck is a Fortune: Adventure, Duty, and Buffalo on the 1841 Frontier, which delves into life on the Oklahoma Plains by exploring the diaries of two soldiers stationed at Fort Gibson: Lt. Marcus Hammond, from an influential South Carolina planter family, and Pvt. John Flynn, a working-class laborer from New York. Through their different backgrounds and experiences, the book sheds light on the conflicting interests present on the pre-Civil War frontier.

Originally from Lawrenceville and an alumnus of Lawrenceville Township High School, Pickering serves as the McFarlin Dean of the Library at the University of Tulsa. He earned his Ph.D. in physical anthropology from Northwestern University. Pickering has authored 9 books and over 70 articles, and has curated over 20 museum exhibitions.

The Meeting is Free and Open to the Public
