HISTORIC WARNER GRAVESITE STUDY IS TOPIC
OF NEXT HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING
Archaeologist Donn R. Grenda will be the guest speaker at a special program meeting of
the Lawrence County Historical Society on Monday, July 14, 7:00 p.m. at the History Center in
Lawrenceville. In 2023, Grenda and his team of archaeologists undertook the recovery of the
historical graves of early Lawrence County settlers John W. Warner, Sr. (1769-1838) and his
second wife, Malinda Duke Warner Crews (1806-1858). The grave locations were determined
using ground-penetrating radar, and the remains identified by skeletal analysis. In accordance with
family wishes, the remains were re-buried at Centerville Cemetery.
Grenda is an archaeologist experienced in both prehistoric and historical archaeology. He
is a principal owner of Statistical Research, Inc., an archaeological and historical consulting firm
with offices throughout the western United States. Grenda received his doctorate in anthropology
from the University of Arizona. He is the author of several books, and has taught at the University
of Arizona and California State University. For eight years, he served as a member of the
California State Historical Resources Commission. In 2024, he was part of a group that recovered
the human remains from a B-17 crash site near Wroclaw, Poland.
The meeting is free and open to the public.
