September 8th 1960 Lawrence County News

Byrad Bridgett, circuit clerk and Lawrenceville undertaker, had an interesting experience, Sunday afternoon when he was making an ambulance trip to Elgin. Bridget had attended a two -car crash northwest of Lawrenceville, on Sunday in which the car of Mr. and Mrs.  Sydney White was involved. Mrs. White, who was seven months pregnant, was at the wheel, and the shock of the crash started a train -reaction. She was taken to Doctor RT Kirkwood who informed her that her child would be born within 20 hours and advised her husband to take her to her home hospital in an ambulance.

Bridgett, the ambulance driver, and the husband started at high speed with Mrs. White in the rear and a few miles south of Morris, a baby girl was born, weighing 3 lbs and 9 oz. The father was the attendant with Bridgett giving the midwifery advice. Bridget says that the advice was given while he was doing 100 mph in an attempt to get the woman to the hospital in Morris. The remark of the physician at the hospital was, “You boys seemed to have done an excellent job.”    (Apparently no one congratulated the mother on the job she had done……)
