The Lawrence County Fair closed September 7, 1928, with the cow calling contest.  There were ten entrants in the second annual cow calling contest, several of whom were women.  The prize, a huge silver cowbell was won by Mrs. Tom Groves, one of the feminine contenders.  Lou Beard, 1927 champion, made a noble but vain effort to defend his championship and the other masculine contestants also made good tries but it was the opinion of the judges and spectators alike that Mrs. Groves was the class of the competition.
