The task of the family historian is to achieve comprehensive yet exacting treatment of their histories. True history should reach beyond the mere dates recorded and should attempt to record the trials and the triumphs, the failures and the successes of the men and woman who predecease us. While it may be seen perhaps as only idle curiosity that prompts our wish to learn as much as possible about the private lives of our ancestors, it is or should be a desire to learn what influences, what ambitions, what struggles, and what triumphs engrossed their lives. These are the things that shaped their personalities and, in some measure, were passed on to us, their descendants.
Historians say that history is only a condensed biography, and that biography is history teaching by example. The list of famous individuals in history upon whose lot it falls to play a conspicuous part in the great drama of life is comparatively short. However, in individual family histories, the deeds of men and women whose primary aim through life is to faithfully perform the duty that comes nearest to hand is long. Much can be learned then from studying the lives of our ancestors.
